Parents’ Expectations and Support Needs about the Future Outcome of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

|
The purpose of this study was to examine the expectation of parents with children with autism spectrum disorders about their future outcomes and their support needs for that. The instrument used in this study was questionnaire that consisted of 16 items regarding the importance and likelihood of future outcome items based on earlier studies and one open-ended question concerning support needs. 383 parents were surveyed for this study. The findings of the study were as follows: (1) The parents of children with autism spectrum disorders had a higher opinion on the importance of it than its likelihood. (2) The fathers and mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders took a significantly different view of the likelihood of future outcome. (3) There were significant gaps among the parents in awareness of the importance and likelihood of future outcome according to some variables related to their children. (4) The parents were in want of the following things to ensure the children’s future outcome: career education and vocational support, more educational opportunities, an increase in educational institutions for adults and local leisure facilities available, and so on. The above-mentioned findings of the study gave the following suggestions: First, family collaboration is mandatory for education for students with autism spectrum disorders. Second, the development and supply of universal and individualized support programs geared toward children with autism spectrum disorders are required. Third, a variety of support systems and arrangement of the welfare system should be prepared to help adults with autism spectrum disorders lead an independent life.
